Need Advice from Ft. Rucker friends!

If you had a CHOICE, would you move here to Ft. Rucker?

Okay my military friends from Ft. Rucker! A mormon woman recently contacted me and told me her husband is applying to be an IP here. She said she doens't know they will get it but they have the choice whether to come here or stay in Arizona (they are from Utah though). She asked me, "I wanted to see how you liked the area and if you'd recommend it? Maybe you can give us insight as to whether it's worth pressing the matter or not." So, she is looking for your opinions of living here at Ft. Rucker. So please comment on here your opinion and any advice you have for her! :) Oh, she has 5 younger children, too. That could be a factor as well! And I think they would live here for 3 years.

Thanks girls! (and if your husbands have advice too, post that also!) She has my blog so she will be reading all of your comments.

Hmm...interesting question. I really did NOT want to come here, at all. But being here for almost a year, I've grown to loving it here. I think it's different if you love off post as opposed to on. So, being an on-post resident, I would knowing what I know now. I hear the schools are awesome too. I feel very safe here, though the weather is "buggin" sometimes. :)

all in all, yep. I'd move. Healthcare stinks from time to time though...might want to check more into that.

I would move to Ft. Rucker in a heart beat if I had the opportunity again. However, that has A LOT to do with the people we met while we were there. The Ozark Ward and the Enterprise Ward are both great wards. My brother really liked the schools on post and so did his son. The beach was close, and despite what people think, ther is A LOT to do in Alabama. You just have to like the outdoors. There were times when I was there that I hated things like the humidity and the roaches and the little nats in the air, but somehow you forget those things and only remember how much fun you had while you were there.

People complain about Ft. Rucker and there not being a lot to do here, but I think the experience is what you make it. Being from a small town, I appreciate the communtiy feel of the area. The people here ( on and off post) are so nice. Also, it is absolutely beautiful. My biggest complaint is that it's so far from Idaho. The flight home is so daunting. However, if your friend doesn't mind being away, I think Rucker is an excellent choice. If we had the opportunity for an IP job here, I'd take it.

The experience our family had on ft rucker was unforgettable! We loved being there (A year and a half) We loved the ward and met wonderful people that impacted our lives greatly! It's funny because I came home to SLC UT and felt that I had been shelttered so much more living on post ft rucker. It's a good wholesome fun area:)

At times you get stir crazy but there is lots around you (a few hours away). I think the biggest downer was we were so far from home... we couldn't just jump in the car and go see our family in Utah. The plans ticket are also expensive.

Alabama was awesome but I would make sure to buy a house that was in the same ward as people on post. Where in Az does she live? Does her husband fly out of Papago or Marana?

This is quite a question... Alabama wouldn't be my first pick; I am not a fan of the bugs, the small town, weather, and a few other things. But, that being said, we have had a good time here, I LOVE the beach and it’s nice to have it so close. Not to mention the people you meet are wonderful as well. I wouldn’t say I am a negative person but, more than anything I want to be honest is all. Derek and I have been married for about 7 months, so the mere fact that being together (no matter where we are) is wonderful. We are not small town kind of people so that’s a bit hard for us… luckily we have most everything 30-45 minutes from us. And Atlanta to run away to when we want to be in a big city. :) Not to mention amazing beaches… Being here now I wouldn’t go back and change it if I could otherwise. But, I would never choose to come back here again if I had the choice. It’s far away from our families and that’s hard for us as well. We have been grateful for the recent drop in prices to fly home and what not but, it’s difficult for our families to visit us. We come from families that love road trips (us included) but, a 30 hour road trip here and than 30 hours back is a bit much for anyone. I am grateful that this is an experience we get to have and grateful to know that it’s only (at the most) two years. I could do anything for 2 years. :) That in and of it self makes me happy. It may be the experience that your family needs and will just love. Who knows? I don’t have 5 young children so I have no clue what it would be like with a family. Also, if you choose to live here, I would live in Enterprise or Dothan because with a family of 7 you might be grateful to have a few more things around you. It’s a toss up really… good luck with your decision. :)

I guess maybe the other species should ring in here too. We have loved Rucker. This is one of the few small-town-ish places where you can almost be in the middle of nowhere while still being in the middle of everywhere. Like Penny said, lots of attractions: BEACHES!, Atlanta, Disney World, Sea World, NASA, and so forth. I've had the experience of being single and married here, living on and off post, in both the Enterprise and Ozark wards. Both wards were great. Given a choice I'd pick the Ozark ward, because missionary work is excellent and the primary is big. It wouldn't be hard for your young kids to find friends. Post housing is good and I never hard any problems with the housing co-op. Living off post can be great too, especially if you're looking to buy. Newer and nicer housing is more abundant in Enterprise Ward areas; all post housing is in the Ozark ward.

My wife loves it here. She even talks about coming back here to retire. It's a long way off, but I wouldn't be opposed either.

Most important of all, separation is terrible.

I would come to Rucker for sure.
