I need advice...

Alright. So I've been hearing a lot of things people have told me to research about protecting my baby. I am going to do the research but I wanted to ask all of you if you have heard of it and what you think.

The first one is baby bottles. I've heard that you shouldn't heat up your baby bottles in the microwave or wash them in the dish washer because heat releases some toxins or something from the plastic of the bottle that is bad for your baby (and this also goes for other plastic bottles that we adults use as well). So I want to know who all has heard of this and whether or not you are taking it seriously. Should I go out and buy the newly approved baby bottles? Or is it okay to say that we've been doing it forever and everything is fine?

The other one I've been hearing about is baby shots. Some people are very adamant to NOT give your baby their shots. Something like the shots are being connected with autism. Some people I know havent ever given their baby's shots until they had to for school. Marek has already gotten some shots but should I not let them give him them anymore? Am I being a bad mom by being naive about this and letting him get whatever shot the doc says? What is going too far?

These are the concerns I have been having. If I need to get new baby bottles, I want to do it right away. And Marek gets his next shots in a month, so I want to know what to do about that also. So, what do you all think?? I need some advice!!

I only have advice about the shots. In Utah my pediatrician was a mother of 5. She was an awesome dr. I asked her what she thought about the "immunization debate." She said, "I love my kids more than anything in the world, I would never do anything to hurt them. All 5 of my kids recieve their immunizations exactly on time, it is very important." I never questioned it after that. :O) It is so hard sometimes to be a mom - and try to decipher all of the wanted and unwanted advice :O)- Ultimately you have to trust yourself. Sometimes it's hard - but cute little Marek was sent to you because you will be the perfect mom for him! :O)

I think that if everyone stopped immunizing their kids, we would have serious epidemics. And there are risks, but I am not willing to risk my kid getting some of the sicknesses that the immunizations protect against. I don't think people who choose not to are wrong though. They alone can know what to do for their kids. And you will know what you should do. I think the plastic thing is junk, personally. Several years ago something like that came out about heating syrup bottles in the microwave. Snopes said false. I liked their research. Its a lot of work to use glass bottles! That totally sounds lazy, huh?

I believe that your kids need their shots. Anyway if they attend any schools they must have them. I agree with Amanda that if we don't give kids their shots there could be serious epidemics. You and Chaz are great parents and you will know what to do :)

I guess it's possible that some chemicals/toxins are released from plastics in the microwave...however whether they cause harm has NEVER been proven (at least according to the research I've done). Just a bunch of balogne info passed to the masses through email spams/forwards. So...when it comes to bottles... if it makes you feel better, you could always mix up the milk in a glass and microwave, then pour into a plastic bottle.

As for immunizations...I have strong feelings against the theory that they cause autism (guess that's cause I'm married to a doctor). Original autism complaints claimed that the mercury in the immunizations was linked to autism...but mercury was taken out of the shots a while ago, I believe. Also...some claim that the dramatic increase in autism is proof of a link to the shots....but that theory can easily be debated. Why is autism more common? It's most likely due to the fact that the medical world has gotten better at diagnosing it...nowadays there are specific traits/characterists that are outlined and defined as "autistic." In the past, children with autism were possibly considered retarded, learning-disabled, anti-social, etc....and REALLY long ago...even possessed. But now, there's a LABEL assigned to specific characteristics. And even within the autism label...there are varying severities.

Some don't like the idea of putting latent diseases (immunizations) into our otherwise healthy bodies...and I guess that's some-what understandable (although risky). But those people are riding on the shoulders of everybody else who HAS been immunized. So, basically they're taking advantage of the rest of us. Which I personally feel is wrong...it totally undermines the wellness of the rest of the community (there's a long reason why this is so...and I won't go into it). Think about under-developed nations that are still struggling with things like Polio, which has been erradicated in our country because of the shots. So obviously there are HUGE benefits to immunizing...not that they aren't risk free...but we KNOW that they ward off disease....some SPECULATE that they are linked to autism, but no scientific data has SHOWN that to be true.

Just when you thought I was off my soapbox...ONE more thing. I have NO problem with people waiting a little while until getting their infants immunizied. I think the older/fatter/stronger the baby, the better! Especially because the baby has had a little more time to build up their own immune systems. So waiting a few months is totally understandable to me.

And finally... I have complete trust in you and Chaz because I know you'll do whatever the spirit directs you to do....that is ALWAYS the best advice...even if it contradicts all the preachy advice of your awesome sister-in-law. :)

You can buy bottles that don't contain the harmful chemicals, and I did, just because I got sick of worrying and washing bottles by hand all day. I've never heard that the microwave can release the toxins, but I suppose that makes sense. I've only heard that microwaving kills the healthy enzymes in the milk, so you really shouldn't be microwaving anyway.

The chances of immunizations causing autism are so slim. I personally don't think its worth NOT getting their shots. God has given us modern medicine for a reason. I also think its better to give them small doses every 3 months than giving them a butt load right before they start school. Another thing to think about is that children don't die from autism, but they do die from the diseases that the shots protect them from.

What you do with your children is entirely your business. Do the most research that you possibly can and make an educated decision based off that. Doctors are there to give you ADVICE not to tell you what you HAVE to do with your kids. I think people who go to the doctor completely uninformed about what treatments their kids will be recieving are being irresponsible. Do your research and talk to the doctor about your concerns. The nice thing about Fort Rucker is they offer shots without thimerosal (which contains significant amounts of mercury), you just have to ask. Also, for the record- You can enroll your kids into public school without immunizing them, you just have to sign a few forms.
About the whole autism thing, it doesn't really matter if vaccinations cause autism.

The real problem is that in SOME shots, there are significant amounts of mercury. Mercury is bad for you- that's why doctors tell you to not eat certain kinds of seafood when your pregnant. If they don't want YOU to eat food with mercury in it, why would they be ok with injecting it into a baby who is hours old?

Also DON'T TAKE ANY ONE PERSONS ADVICE!!! Go and do the research yourself. Talk to Chaz about it. Tell the doctor what you decided, not the other way around.

As for the bottles, microwaving them with breastmilk kills nutrients that used to be in the milk. And there are more hotspots if you microwave wich could randomly burn your baby. That'sd all I have found out on the matter as I have breastfed. DO RESEARCH ON THIS TOO. Only use websites that are medical. Go to the library and look up medical journals. My English professors told me I can't use Wikipedia as a credible source:)

Also, call Maxine Meyers. She knows a lot about homeopathic remedies and junk. She is like a freakin library for credible information. She likes visitors too.

Sorry if I was too opinionated on the matter. And sorry if someone disagrees with me. Not really though.

What I've learned so far in my short 6 months of experience is to stop researching, it just makes me anal and paranoid. Just trust your instincts, mom, and husband.

What I've found is that I never use bottles, so I don't really have advice to tell about that. But about the shots... I was really torn.. I'm kind of a hippie, and it scared me to inject my baby with all of these substances. There are some things they give newborns that are completely unnecassary... Like they don't need to get a shot in the foot when they are 15 minutes old. They're going to be fine. But I was more scared about NOT giving him his immunizations than to let him get them.. But if it really scares you, you don't have to do them all at once. You could stagger them more, or just do one at a time. I think its important that they get them.. But I'm not that big of a stickler to care if he's a few months late getting them. My sisters have missed a few for their kids just because they've been super busy, and then just caught up. They'll live. But just pray about it and you'll get the peace you need to take care of him with whatever you decide to do. I have a lot of friends who are anti- immunizations, and I love them. But its a personal choice. Good job for being worried. I had to pray a lot just for comfort, because I was scared the first few times Milo got his shots... I cried way more than he did.. But I felt good about him getting them when it was all said and done! Good luck!

You've gotten alot of advice, but my personal opinion is that we have the advanced technology because of our Heavenly Father, I personlly am glad that I got all my girls immunized. Follow the spirit. I agree that there is so much out there that can make you scared and paranoid..... I try not to read too much of it because it makes me second guess my feelings when I prayed about it. So I just say... follow the spirit.

According to my research Plastic contains Bisphenal-A (BPA) a cancer causing agent. Some of the research involed mice and Nalgene bottles but I won't go into that. The problem with BPA is that it has the same chemical makeup as estrogen. So when it is ingested into our bodies the BPA's bond to things that estrogen would normally bond with. Since our bodies do not need as much estrogen as we are getting BPA's our brains may be getting the signal that they do not need to produce as much estrogen as normally they would. Obviously this can cause problems. If it were me I would invest in the new bottles. They aren't that expensive anyway. The nipples contain BPA's too so try to find ones without it. I hope that this helped. I don't know enough about the immunizations to make an educated guess yet, but as of now I think that they are a good idea. You'll know what to do. :)
